History of textile industry in Iran
The textile industry is considered to be the oldest industry in the world because after the need for food and housing, the need for clothing is one of the first needs of humans. Regarding the history of the textile industry in Iran, there are scattered signs and works available.
About five thousand years before Christ, due to climate changes, fields and meadows were created, which made the cave people of the Iranian plateau to switch to a new life and decide to live in the plains. Relatively significant progress was seen in the civilization of these people compared to previous periods. The oldest people of the plains were the people of Silk near Kashan. In the place where these people live, stone and clay spindles have been seen, so it is thought that the people were familiar with the textile industry at that time. This industry grew significantly during the industrial revolution.
The raw material of the textile industry
In the textile industry, the raw materials used include a variety of natural and synthetic fibers, chemical dyes, crude oil, paraxylene, pure terephthalic acid, and monoethylene glycol. Meanwhile, the fibers used in the textile industry also have different types, which include the following.
- Natural fibers with animal origin: such as wool and silk
- Natural fibers with plant roots: such as cotton, hemp and linen
- Mineral fibers: such as asbestos and fireproof cotton
- Synthetic fibers: such as nylon and polyester
The state of the textile industry in Iran
Among the basic economic needs of the Iranian people, textile ranks third after food and shelter. This industry includes 4% of added industrial value and 10% of the total export of Iran’s industry.
According to the available statistics in 2017, the turnover of the textile sector in Iran was twelve billion dollars. 30% of this amount is related to clothing made in Turkey and imported either officially or smuggled. In fact, in general, the import of goods from Turkey to Iran is about three billion dollars, of which about one billion dollars includes clothes alone. In this way, if Turkey’s trade vision with Iran is realized in 2023, this country will be able to devote 16 billion of its annual export volume to clothing alone.
